World Book Day 2022 was celebrated in style with a costume catwalk at one local primary school.

From Willy Wonka to Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland, youngsters at Oak Hill Academy in Feltham delighted in taking inspiration from their favourite book characters.

Pupils started the day by parading their attire during morning assembly before winners were chosen from each year group.

There were also book activities and fun book themed lessons in class all day.

Pupils also enjoyed a workshop with Zoe Antoniades, author of the book Cally & Jimmy who resided in the library at Oak Hill for the day to talk to the children and discuss her work.

Explaining the importance of World Book Day, which is celebrating 25 years this year, Honesty Darkes, Senior Assistant Principal at Oak Hill, told the Hounslow Herald:

‘‘Reading is a passion at Oak Hill Academy. Our students were very excited at the prospect of speaking to Zoe and finding out more about her passion for writing and what inspired her books. The children always ask the experts for handy hints and tips for writing exciting, engaging and entertaining stories.

‘‘World Book Day is a chance to bring reading to life. It is an opportunity to share our favourite books (staff included), discover characters the children have not come across before and participate in a range of activities where the children dive into the magic and wonderful world of literature. The discussions, activities and workshops widen the children’s reading and cultural horizons and the children go away excited to read and with a passion to pick up a book.’’
